Tips for Lowering Your Air Conditioning Costs This Summer

Summer in St. Louis and heat are synonymous with each other. Summer heat also usually coincides with high air conditioning bills. However, we are about to provide you with some tips that will allow you to keep the air conditioning running without breaking the bank.

Keep Your Air Vents Clean and Open

This may seem obvious, but for many of us, we don’t take the time to check whether our air vents are open and working properly. You may think that closing vents will keep your air conditioning costs down. This is not true. Closing your vents will cause your air conditioning costs to rise. Closing your vents makes it harder for your air conditioner to keep your home cool.

Maximize Your Home’s Airflow

From elementary school science class we know that heat rises. When you’re too hot, you want the heat to rise and exit your home. A fan is a great way to help circulate the air throughout your home. It helps to move unwanted heat up and out of your living spaces. Plus, it is also considerably cheaper to run when compared to air conditioning.

However, you want to make sure that your fan is spinning in the right direction for the season. In the summer your fan should be turning counterclockwise. This helps move the hot air out and out. In the winter it should be turning clockwise to push the heat back down.

Cut down on the Oven

Your oven can be the enemy of your air conditioning. Reduce the amount you use your oven and you will reduce the amount of heat that escapes from the oven and counteracts your air conditioning. Consider using a microwave or toaster oven wherever you can.

Cover Your Windows

Using drapes or solar covers over your windows will keep heat from entering your home making your air conditioning go a little further.

Keep an Eye on Your Thermostat

This is a no-brainer but is often overlooked. If your air conditioning is set to kick on at a higher temperature it will not run as frequently and therefore will save you money. Adjusting your thermostat could go a long way toward helping you save some cash this summer.

When to Do Your Laundry

This is a very simple tip that can really help to reduce the amount of air conditioning you use. Your laundry machines put out heat. You can reduce the effect of this heat by making sure that you put a proper size load in the laundry. Over stuffing your laundry machines can cause them to work inefficiently. You also want to make sure to do your laundry in the evening so the heat of the day doesn’t mix with the excess heat of your laundry machines. This is a very simple way to cut down your need for air conditioning.

Tweak Your Dishwasher Routine

Heat that escapes from your dishwasher can counteract your air conditioning by heating up your home. However, there are some simple changes you can make to undo this. Your dishwasher uses heat to fight water spots on your dishes. Heat is the enemy of air conditioning. Fortunately, it is not the only way to stop water spots from appearing on your dishes. Using a dishwashing detergent with a rinsing agent will prevent water from leaving spots. Most dishwashers have an option to disable the heat. So, strange as it may sound, using dish detergent with a rinsing agent may help your air conditioning go quite a bit further.

Power down Unused Electronics

The less heat you have in your home the more bang for your buck you get out of your air conditioning. Modern electronics like computers and game systems pump out more heat than you realize. Powering off your computer and game system when you’re not using them keeps them from producing heat round-the-clock. The same can be said for other air conditioning thwarting electronics throughout your home.
